The start to a new school year is right around the corner, and we are getting ready for another amazing year at Discovery Elementary! Below are a few important dates, along with some general information.
Teacher/Classroom Assignments: Parents of students in grades 1st - 5th, classroom assignments will be available on your Parent Portal (Infinite Campus) today. Login to your Parent Portal and find “Schedule” on the left-hand side - you will find your student(s) classroom teacher listed there. Parents of incoming kindergarten students, your child(s) classroom teacher should have contacted you directly.
School Supply Lists: You can find your student(s) supply list at School Supply Lists.
Kindergarten Meet & Greet: A "Kindergarten Meet & Greet" will be held on Wednesday, August 19. Your child’s teacher should have contacted you with additional information about this event.
Back to School Open House: Discovery’s Open House is on Tuesday, August 25, from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm (come and go as you please). You will enter Discovery using the main entrance, which is entrance A - all other doors will be locked. At Open House, you can tour the school, meet teachers, and drop off school supplies.
First Day of School: The first day of school is Thursday, August 27. On the first day of school, students should look for their teacher on the playground. Teachers will be holding a sign with their classroom number. Please say goodbye to your student on the playground as we do not allow parents to walk their child to the classroom.
School hours are from 8:00 am - 2:45 pm. We have staggered dismissal times, which are listed below. All students MUST be picked up by 3:00 pm. Breakfast will be available on the first day of school. Breakfast is served daily from 7:30 - 7:55 am, which is also when the front doors will be unlocked. Supervision is provided on the playground beginning at 7:40 am. At 7:45 am staff will begin to let students into the building.

School Meals: The breakfast and lunch menus will be available online at: https://schools.mealviewer.com/school/DiscoveryElementarySF. Funds can be deposited online at: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain.action?clientKey=&requestAction=home. You will setup an account and you will need your students ID number, which can be found in your Parent Portal. Funds can also be dropped off in the office; we can accept cash or check.
School Bus Information: If your student is eligible for bussing, you will receive bus information (via email) prior to the first day of school.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up: If you are dropping off or picking up your child at the semi-circular driveway around the parking lot, there is NO PARKING around the semi-circular driveway - you must stay in your vehicle. When dropping off, please pull all the way up around the semi-circle drive, so we can prevent a back-up of traffic on Discovery Ave. Children should exit the car on the passenger side of the vehicle. Students also may be dropped off on 22nd Street. The circular drive on the east side of the building is only to be used by daycare vans and school buses before and after school. Students who are crossing the street must cross at the corner/crosswalk or where there is a crossing guard. If you need to come into the building, please park in the parking lot.
Parent Volunteers: Throughout the year, your child’s teacher may need volunteers for a field trip or a classroom event. All volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Form, which can be found at https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/page/volunteering-mentoring. A new volunteer form is required every school year. You can drop off the completed form in the office or you can email it to Jasmine.Iddings@k12.sd.us. Some volunteer opportunities will require a background check. Information on completing the background check is on the attached Volunteer Form.

Spirit Wear: Discovery’s online spirit wear store is now open! To order, go to Discovery Elementary Spirit Wear 2026 | Big Frog Custom T-Shirts Sioux Falls. The store will close at midnight on September 7. Not ready to order - the online store will be open one more time in December.
