Congratulations to the 12 current and former Discovery Elementary students who represented our school at SD Elementary Honor Choir last Saturday. We are so proud of you!

Classroom 301 did “Pumpkin Math” with the help of parent volunteers! The class split into groups and each group was given a pumpkin. The groups:
- estimated how many seeds were inside the pumpkin.
- weighed it.
- measured its circumference.
- counted by 10s and 100s to find the total number of seeds.
Afterwards, the groups carved their pumpkins and weighed them again to find the weight difference.

Just a reminder that if you are volunteering for tomorrow’s Fall Classroom party and your student(s) will have a different plan after school, please let us know. This is especially important if your student normally rides the school bus or goes to daycare after school. Please email Jennifer.Hogan@k12.sd.us or Jasmine.Iddings@k12.sd.us – or feel free to call the office.

Register now for Jefferson High School's Girls Basketball "Shooting Camp" on Saturday!

Students had a SPOOKtacular time at the Fall Dance last Friday! Thank you again to everyone that helped make the dance a success – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Brr! With the change in seasons, please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the weather. There is no coverage from the wind on the playground. Also, it is important to monitor the wind chill – the “feels like” temperature. Below are the guidelines that we follow.
Thursday night, Jefferson High School and Roosevelt High School are having a "Trunk or Treat" from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. All kids are welcome!

Kindergarten students had a “Fire Safety” assembly this week presented by Sioux Falls Fire Rescue (SFFR) and Avera Family Life Educators. SFFR uses puppets and fun songs to teach students about important fire safety topics. Students learn everything from what to do if they find matches to how to crawl low under smoke. Students especially enjoyed puppets, Blaze and Firefighter Frank!

Last Friday, classroom 303 took the "classroom" outside - students soaked up the sunshine and a good book!

We do not have enough volunteers for the Fall Dance on Friday. IF WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS BY 10:00 AM TOMORROW, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, THE FALL DANCE WILL BE CANCELLED.
There are 30 minute time slots available and the “jobs” are very easy: set-up, concessions, running a game, and clean-up. As of now, most of the volunteers signed up are Discovery staff and PTO members. For events like this to happen and to be a success, we need parent volunteers.
To volunteer, sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44ADAD2CA3FF2-52359975-2024#/. Again, if we do not have enough by 10:00 am tomorrow, Thursday, October 23, it will be cancelled.

Prairie West Library is closing at noon on Friday, October 24. If your student normally goes there after school, you will need to make other arrangements. As a reminder, all students must be picked up by 3:00 pm.

Classrooms K03, K05, and K06 had an unbeLEAFable time on their autumn field trip to Our Farm! Students did everything from picking pumpkins to navigating the corn maze to jumping in the corn pit.

In PE today, classrooms 404 and 405 worked hard playing scooter football and ultimate football - we might have some future NFL players!

During science class, classroom 404 students designed their own wind turbines! To help a blackout problem, students learned how to bring more energy to an electrical system. Students gathered the necessary materials and then they planned, created, and tested their wind turbine designs. The purpose of the lesson was to provide students with the opportunity to design, make, and test a solution to a problem.

School pictures are here and are going home with students today! If you did not order pictures and would like to, please see the flyer below for more information. Picture retakes are on Tuesday, October 21, starting at 8:05 am. Students that are having their picture retaken must bring the original pictures that they ordered and return them to the photographer.

We have several items in our "Lost & Found". Please check for lost items during Parent-Teacher Conferences, otherwise you will have to check-in at the office to look for lost items during the school day. Items not claimed by Friday, October 17, at 4:00 pm will be donated.

Students who attend Discovery’s before and after school program, CLC, are participating in Sioux Falls “Paint the Plow” and are representing Discovery! CLC is having a competition between SFSD’s participating schools. Voting has started and ends Thursday, October 9. Please go vote for the Discovery CLC plow at https://www.facebook.com/share/1aKxTmdg4r/?mibextid=wwXIfr. To vote, just “like” the photo of the Discovery CLC plow. The photo with the most “likes” wins funds to use for supplies and games at the afterschool program.
The Sioux Falls “Paint the Plow” event for participants and the public is on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm in the Great Plains Zoo parking lot.
