It is important to be prepared for the winter storms and extreme cold that every South Dakota winter brings. Please read the following information so you are aware of the procedures for school-related cancellations and postponements. School officials use their best judgment about school closings, late starts, or early dismissals; however, please remember that a parent has the right to keep children home or to pick them up from school early if they feel weather conditions require this action.
LATE START OR CANCELLED
In the event that school needs to be cancelled or delayed, families will be alerted via a phone call. You can also check the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us for updated information. Announcements will also be made on local radio and television stations. Please avoid calling the school or the Instructional Planning Center. Phone lines are needed for emergency communications.
• If school is one hour late, breakfast will be served.
• If school is two hours late, breakfast will NOT be served.
EARLY DISMISSAL
Storms occasionally move in during the day. If school is dismissed early, families will receive a phone call and the information will appear on the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us. Dismissals will be referred to as “one hour early” or “two hours early” due to the number of different building schedules. It is very important that every family has a plan for early dismissal. Be sure your student knows where to go in case no one is at home. Talk to your student about his/her safety during winter weather emergencies. Make sure students are properly dressed for predicted weather conditions: walking home, waiting for the bus, or being delayed on a bus in a weather-related situation.

On Tuesday, Steve and Sarah Miller visited Mrs. Haug’s classroom K01 in honor of Veterans Day. Steve is currently on active duty in the Air Force, and Sarah is an Air Force Veteran. Thank you for sharing your time and stories - and most of all, thank you for your service!

During the recent elections, 5th grade ULE (Unique Learning Experiences/Gifted) students used Sam Labs Maker Kits to write computer codes and create a voting machine. They connected their Chromebooks to the Sam Labs kits and polled 137 fifth grade students on their favorite candy – chocolate or gummies. The data showed 69 students favored chocolate, over 68 votes for gummies. Excellent work, 5th grade ULE!

In honor of Veterans’ Day on Monday, November 11, all 2nd grade students were asked to bring pictures or names of Veterans they know and love. The pictures and names are hanging outside of Mrs. Teer’s 201 classroom as a “Wall of Honor” which can be viewed at https://youtu.be/bVRE8WihwKI.
Thank you, 2nd grade students and families, for sharing your Veteran with us - and thank you to all Veterans for your sacrifice and your service!

Students from Sonia Sotomayor (pictured in this photo) and the rest of the Sioux Falls School District would like to wish you a Happy Veteran's Day! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
South Dakota public schools proudly recognize and support the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. Their sacrifices and dedication have upheld the values and freedoms we cherish, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to protecting our nation.
Our schools are committed to instilling respect and appreciation for veterans among our students, helping them understand the importance of service and dedication. We invite our community to join us in expressing heartfelt gratitude and respect for our veterans.
Thank you to all our veterans for your service and sacrifice!

REMINDER! Sioux Falls School District schools and offices will be CLOSED on Monday, November 11, in honor of Veteran’s Day.
Thank you to all who have served! Especially SFSD staff members who proudly serve(d) in our schools and on the front lines. 🇺🇸

Congratulations to the 15 current and former Discovery students who participated in the South Dakota Elementary Honor Choir this past Saturday! You represented our school so well!

Some of Discovery’s classrooms had their own Presidential election yesterday! In addition to voting for President, some classrooms had other “policies” they were voting on such as: Special Treat Day (Oreos or Chips Ahoy) and Special Dress-Up Day (hats or pajamas). Check out our great voter turnout at: https://youtu.be/A5cSBELRIGo!

Did you know that classroom 401 has its very own “Justice League”! Zoey, Goose, and Oakley are Therapy Dogs that take turns every week spending the day in the classroom. The dogs are certified Therapy Dogs through Healing Heart in Nebraska.

From spills at lunch to slipping in a puddle, accidents happen. Unfortunately, our stock of extra pants and underwear has dwindled down. We are looking for donations of:
- New or gently used pants for boys and girls (ex. sweatpants, leggings, etc.). No pants with holes, rips, or stains please. Kindergarten through 3rd grade sizes.
- New underwear for boys and girls (no used). Kindergarten through 3rd grade sizes.
Also:
- We do not need shirts or socks.
- If your student borrows a change of clothes, please wash and return them.
- You may want to put an extra set of clothes in your student’s backpack.

Discovery Elementary 5th grade student council set out with a BIG goal - to collect 1,000 pairs of new socks to be donated to the Bishop Dudley House. Not only did they meet their goal, they surpassed it! On Friday, the council celebrated as they proudly handed over a whopping 1,081 pairs of socks to help those in need!
Did you know, since 2007, the month of November has been recognized as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month? As many as 2.5 million youth experience homelessness per year.
Representatives from the Bishop Dudley House were in attendance on Friday to collect the donated socks. Student council members had the opportunity to meet with the representatives to learn more about Bishop Dudley's mission and how their donation will make a difference for the people in our community. They asked thoughtful questions, learned about the impact of their efforts, and even helped load the socks up for delivery!
Thank you to these young leaders for showcasing the power of kindness, generosity, and community!

Tomorrow is the last day of our Socktober campaign. We’ve surpassed last year’s total donations and are just shy of this year’s goal by 33 pairs! C’mon Discovery, let’s hit Student Council’s goal of 1000 pairs of new socks. The socks will be donated to the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House in Sioux Falls. The greatest need is adult socks. Donations can be put in various “Socktober boxes” around the school. Thank you Discovery community for the donations received so far!

Memorial Middle School (MMS) has four core values, and they focus on one each quarter. First quarter, they have really focused on COMMUNITY. What does it mean to take care of AND give back to the community. Their grand finale “community” project is to provide a safe and fun environment for west-side trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.
The MMS PRO Time classrooms will be hosting “Treat the Halls of MMS” on October 31, from 5:30 pm - 6:20 pm. Students are decorating doors and passing out candy at 47 locations throughout the halls and any child accompanied by an adult is welcome to attend.

With tomorrow being October 31, this is a reminder that students should NOT wear a costume to school. We have recently had plenty of activities and dress-up days: Fall classroom parties, Fall Dance, and today’s secret theme dress up day. Thank you for your cooperation!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped at the Fall Dance! It was a success, and we couldn't have done it without you. Check out some of our little monsters and princesses at: https://youtu.be/l2lI3uxGk54.

Some of our kindergarten classrooms read the book "The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be" and made unique hot air balloons inspired by the beautiful illustrations of the story. The book celebrates uniqueness and individuality physically and in ways that we learn. The balloons will be a reminder to students to be proud of who they are all year!
